I wanted the walls painted blue and the ceiling white to look

like Malcolm Campbell’s Blue Bird which I used to look at

each night. On the top bunk next to me was a poster which

I got in a cereal box of every land speed record holder

since 1898, of which I liked the Blue Bird best. I liked

the top bunk because I’d get this feeling sometimes of

the night rising up around me. My brother would pass out

immediately. A speed sleeper. But when our parents fought

I looked at the Blue Bird. Recently, I discovered that

Malcolm Campbell kept a pennant from the British Union

of Fascists in his car. A blue background with a bolt of

white lightning. And now I wonder if that pennant meant

to him something like what the Blue Bird meant to me:

not a way to stop being scared but to move faster. A belief

that maybe if you break the speed of sound, sound itself

disappears. Brother, I can’t hear you sleeping underneath me.
